National and state programs to build beef demand
Texas Barbecue
For nearly 20 years the Texas Beef Council (TBC) has teamed up with the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) to host Hong Kong's most prominent event featuring American food - The Great American Barbecue, Texas Style. This year's event attracted a record turnout of more than 500 invitation-only guests from the island's food and beverage trade. The event is structured around a Texas barbecue theme where guests sample U.S. beef in an outdoor buffet-like setting. Attendees enjoyed a delicious selection of slow-cooked U.S. beef items, including whole roasted ribeyes, grilled strip loins, brisket, boneless short ribs, flat irons and hanger steaks. The guest list included industry professionals such as meat importer and distributors, hotel managers, retail buyers, restaurant operators, chefs and culinary journalist. The Texas Beef Checkoff is the primary sponsor of this demand-building event.
Strides Across Texas
The Texas Beef Council (TBC) recently sponsored Kevin Kline, morning radio personality on The New 93Q KKBQ-FM radio in Houston, who ran 481 miles in 13 days to raise money for pediatric cancer research. TBC provided a beef meal for Kline and his fans each night of the run. Fans also received delicious beef recipes and beef nutrition information. Kline began his journey in Dallas running from the Cotton Bowl to Austin, San Antonio and ending in Houston. Money raised through this event is donated to the Texas Children's Cancer Center.
Beef Quality Vets
The Texas Beef Council (TBC) recently partnered with Texas AgriLife Extension and the Texas Veterinary Medical Association to provide a Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) update to over 40 Texas veterinarians and several technicians. Four industry experts provided presentations on BQA topics with a focus on animal welfare. The speakers gave insight into the importance of a veterinarian's voice in animal welfare discussions.
Holiday Beef Buzz
As a result of editor deskside visits the checkoff-funded food communications program conducted this summer, the December 2009 edition of Family Circle features a recipe for Beef Tenderloin with Blue Cheese Butter in the "Dinner is Served" column. In addition, the December edition of Redbook magazine highlights a recipe for Steak and Mushroom Pot Pies in its "Holiday Survival Suppers" story. Combined, Family Circle and Redbook reach more than 15 million readers.
